DJ Drew
In May 2008, Malawi received up and coming new talent on the market, a debut music album called ‘The Journey’ from a Malawian known radio disc jockey, Drew. Born Andrew Albert kwizombe in a Christian family of seven him being the fifth on 14th July 1982; Andrew got inspiration at a tender age, listening to music from his late father’s long play records. While in high school, he and a few fellow students spent most of their free time composing, making music and performing at school functions. In 1998 Andrew and his friends won their school the best young talent performance on a project to combat HIV/AIDS in schools; a competition in which several local schools including theirs participated.
In 2002, a year after he finished high school, he enrolled for computer lessons but could still find time to do music in church where together with four of his friends formed a group that performed in most of the church’s activities. In 2004 he joined a local radio station called FM 101 POWER where he polished his production as well as djying skills both on radio and in clubs. While working with Power 101 he had the opportunity in March 2007 to showcase his djying skills on a popular television program called “Oboma” and ‘The Zone’ on M-net’s music channel, ‘CHANNEL O’ in the Republic of South Africa.
The appearance on television enhanced his vision to work full time as a music producer, hence the release of the first house album in Malawi “The Journey”.
He is currently attached to the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, CDD-GHANA an Accra-based policy research think tank, undertaking a 12-month exchange program.
